Orange Day 2025: Our canteens are part of it!

Studierendenwerk and other organisations are sending out a visible signal against violence against women with a large-scale sandwich bag campaign. More than 150,000 orange sandwich bags will be handed out in the city from 25 November - the International Day against Violence against Women - under the slogan "Gewalt kommt uns nicht in die Tüte!".

Bags in all Studierendenwerk canteens

10,000 bags have been distributed in the last few days to the Studierendenwerk's catering outlets alone, including the facilities on the university campus and the Sonnenstraße canteen at the central location of Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

"We have also been involved in this campaign in previous years and are very happy to support the Orange Day message," says Ulrike Berenbeck, Deputy Head of University Catering at the Studierendenwerk.

Emergency numbers printed

The distribution campaign runs until 10 December, International Human Rights Day. The strikingly designed bags not only provide information about the alarming reality of violence against women, but also offer tangible help: Printed emergency numbers for the women's advice centre and the nationwide help hotline are available as important contact points, and the finger movements of the "silent call for help" are also depicted to signal an emergency situation. The phrase "No to violence against girls and women" can be read on the bags in fourteen languages. The design was created by Viola Dessin. The former student at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts completed her Master's degree in "Editorial Design" in the summer semester.

Broad alliance against violence

The campaign is supported by a broad alliance of local and national partners: in addition to the City of Dortmund, the Soroptimistinnen, the Zonta Club Dortmund and Phönix Dortmund, the equal opportunities officers of the universities and university hospitals in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (LaKoF) and the Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Studierendenwerke NRW are also involved.

Together they are pursuing a clear goal: to raise awareness of violence against women and sensitise people to take a closer look and offer support.
