University catering

  • Disposable, no thanks! We only use reusable containers and in 2020 we introduced reusable tableware and deposit cups for coffee to-go.
  • We continuously adjust the food production in the establishments to the number of guests. In this way, we avoid processing food that can no longer be sold.
  • Food that is no longer used is not destroyed, but donated. For example, to aid organisations such as the Gasthaus or the Tafel in Dortmund. In addition, we have been handing in unsold goods via the app Too Good to Go since 11 July 2022.
  • By developing our own productions - for example, our own pasta in the food faculty - we can produce according to demand, keep track of the list of ingredients and reduce packaging waste at the same time.
  • Through workshops, we continuously raise awareness of the topic of sustainability among the staff in the dining halls.
  • By participating in the European Broiler Chicken Initiative, we are also committed to improving animal welfare.(short report)
Please note: Personal consultation hours are only possible again from 13.01.2022!

Too Good To Go - the app against food waste

Since 11.07.2022, we have been the first student union nationwide to work with the largest B2C marketplace for surplus food: Too Good To Go. Using the app of the same name, our guests can purchase surprise bags, so-called "Magic Bags". At the start of the project, we sell bagels and muffins in the bags that were not sold during regular opening hours, but are of course still in perfect condition. These products will be sold for about one third of the original price. The reservation and payment is done completely digitally via the app.

Mobility

  • Together with our cooperation partner sigo, we have set up rental stations for e-bikes at several housing complexes. These are not only available to the tenants in the housing complexes, but can also be used by residents from the neighbourhood.
  • Through CampusBike, we offer locations where students can rent bikes at special rates.
  • E-vehicles have been added to the Studierendenwerk fleet.
  • We make our housing complexes bicycle-friendly by creating secure on-site parking stations.
  • Employees of the Studierendenwerk have the option of leasing a bicycle or e-bike through their employer.

Building and renovation

  • New buildings, for example the new residential complex in Hagen, meet current environmental standards. Sustainable building materials are preferred.
  • Our numerous existing properties, such as the refectory building, the day-care centre and the residential complexes, are continuously renovated and modernised in terms of energy efficiency. This includes, for example, insulation, shading and lighting.
  • For all measures, it is examined whether sustainable energy producers such as photovoltaics, solar thermal energy or air-heat pumps can be used.
  • Roof areas are to be increasingly planted.
  • In some housing complexes, for example in Meitnerweg, raised beds are available for students to cultivate on their own.

Digitisation

  • As one of the larger employers in Dortmund, we promote the concept of mobile working. In this way, we save resources on site and help reduce traffic.
  • Meetings and consultations are also increasingly offered online. Students can thus exchange information with Studierendenwerk employees from home.
  • Printed material is a thing of the past. We are increasingly communicating and informing digitally.
  • The paperless office is a big goal, and we want to achieve it with many small steps. To achieve this, we are testing and using new programmes that help us optimise processes.

Life in the nursery

  • In our Kita im Grünen, projects on the topic of sustainability are constantly on the agenda.
