FAQ: Frequently asked questions

Do I have to register for counselling?

Please book an appointment for an individual consultation. Appointments are allocated promptly.

You can visit the open consultation hours without an appointment. This always takes place on Thursdays from 1pm to 2pm in the counselling offices of the Psychological Counselling Service (Mensa building).

How does the counselling work?

In an initial meeting, we first clarify your concerns with you. We then jointly determine the further procedure and decide whether there should be further talks or whether there is a more suitable offer for you. The extent of the counselling depends on your individual concerns; as a rule, there are about five appointments available.

When you take advantage of the counselling, a counselling relationship is established between you and the Psychological Counselling Centre of the Studierendenwerk Dortmund. The counselling is carried out by the employees of the Counselling Centre on the basis of an internal distribution; it may happen that different counsellors carry out the counselling on a rotating basis. The counselling service is a psychological counselling service, no therapy is offered and no healing is practised.

What can I expect in the initial interview?

The initial consultation lasts about 45 minutes. It serves to clarify your personal concerns and to check whether psychological counselling is suitable for you. We are interested in why you are looking for support, what expectations and wishes you have of us and what you want to achieve through counselling.

In addition, you will have the opportunity to discuss individual questions and concerns with us during the initial interview. At the end of the initial interview, we will jointly determine the next steps. This can mean, among other things, that we arrange further talks or support you in finding a more suitable offer of help.

Where does the counselling take place?

Individual counselling takes place either in person at our premises in Dortmund, or online in the form of a video consultation.

The counselling offices are located in the Studierendenwerk refectory building, Vogelpothsweg 85 in 44227 Dortmund, on level 0, the parking level, right next to the former "Vital" bistro. The counselling centre is barrier-free accessible. Sufficient parking spaces, bus stops, S-Bahn and H-Bahn stations are nearby.

By arrangement, counselling can also be provided online in the form of a video consultation! Please feel free to ask!

Who can take advantage of the counselling?

Psychological counselling is available to students at TU Dortmund, FH Dortmund, FH Südwestfalen and FernUni Hagen.

What does the counselling cost?

Psychological counselling is offered by the Studierenenwerk, the social service provider on campus.
Counselling is free of charge for students at TU Dortmund, FH Dortmund, FH Südwestfalen and FernUni Hagen.

Who advises me?

We are a team of three psychologists with completed or advanced additional psychotherapeutic training.

I can't wait for a counselling appointment. Where can I find help immediately?

If you need urgent counselling, the team of the telephone counselling service(www.telefonseelsorge.de) is available to you free of charge around the clock. You can reach them on 0800 1110111 and 0800 1110222. In acute mental crises, contact the emergency room of the local psychiatric hospital.
