New canteen prices from January - dish of the day remains at 1.90 euros
A sharp rise in purchasing prices coupled with a lack of state subsidies has led to a price adjustment for many canteen meals in the Studierendenwerk's facilities with effect from 1 January. Not affected by the adjustment is the "Tagwerk" dish of the day, which students can still purchase for 1.90 euros.
The price levels for the three menu lines "Stammwerk 1", "Grünwerk" and "Stammwerk 2" will be adjusted - for students to 2.80 euros, 3.30 euros and 3.80 euros (previously 2.30 euros/2.80 euros/3.00 euros). The surcharges for staff and guests are 2.10 euros and 3.20 euros per meal.
From 2024, these same surcharges will also be charged for a full menu at the Galerie, the fast-food bistro on Campus Nord in Dortmund - although prices for students will not increase here. The classic "currywurst with chips" will therefore cost 4.30 euros for students, 6.40 euros for staff and 7.50 euros for guests.
The buffet price in the canteens will be more expensive, increasing by 0.30 euros per 100g to 1.20 euros for students. Staff will pay 1.50 euros, guests 1.80 euros. The price of side dishes will also be adjusted and will cost €0.80 instead of €0.50 from January (staff €1.00, guests €1.20).
Side dishes on the plate
The new price structure will also be accompanied by a change in the arrangement of the side dishes. In the Tagwerk, Grünwerk and Stammwerk menu lines, the side dishes will be served directly on the plate. This is intended to reduce the number of crockery items required, which will make work easier when serving and washing up. However, there will still be additional side dishes that can be combined as required. The selection of separately prepared salads, soups and desserts will also remain.
No increase for two years
"Of course we don't like taking this step," says Johannes Zedel, acting managing director of the Studierendenwerk. "But because the purchase prices have risen sharply for two years and at the same time we cannot expect any additional state subsidies for 2024 - unlike in 2023 - we cannot avoid a price adjustment. Nevertheless, we have been able to keep prices stable for the Stammwerk and Grünwerk menu lines for two years now. We have also deliberately left the daily special at 1.90 euros to ensure that all students can continue to afford a meal in the canteen, even in the current financially challenging times."
The Studierendenwerk Administrative Board approved the new price concept for the canteens at its December meeting.
