Canteen opened for the open day

TU Dortmund University hosted an open day on Saturday (9 November) and many visitors came - also to take a look behind the scenes of the main canteen. The Studierendenwerk offered five guided tours over the course of the day to experience the largest canteen on campus from a completely different perspective.

Rico Heber, Head of Quality Management and Sustainability, guided the guests through the labyrinthine routes in the canteen building - starting from the central warehouse, to the canteen kitchen, to the dining room. The day's mascot was Karli, the chickpea, because unlike in everyday university life, only one dish was produced in the canteen: Falafel dough, which was sold at the Studierendenwerk food truck, freshly prepared.

All five groups of visitors gained exciting insights into the storage and production of a canteen kitchen. There was also further information about the business, for example: What is the most popular dish? (French fries) What time does work start in the warehouse? (5.30 a.m.) And can external guests also eat in the canteen? (Yes, very gladly!). In addition to the theory, there was also plenty of practice, as the tour ended with a tasting of small snacks from the catering department.

The Studierendenwerk participated in the Open Day as a partner of TU Dortmund University and, with a look behind the scenes of the main canteen, was one of many events in the official programme, which, according to the university, was more extensive than ever before.
