1. DSW poster competition: Get out of crisis mode!

    Climate change, war, energy crisis: How do students deal with the multiple crises of our time? What are their fears and hopes? How do they cope with these crises? That's what the umbrella organisation of all student and student union organisations in Germany, the German Student Union, Deutsches Studierendenwerk (DSW), wants to find out from design students nationwide in its 38th poster competition under the motto "Get out of crisis mode!". It's worth taking part, entries are open until 5 November.

  2. Change of leadership: New management at the Kita im Grünen

    Dominik Struck takes over the pedagogical management of our Kita im Grünen with immediate effect. He succeeds Birgit Weber, who retired at the beginning of the summer holidays. With the facility at Campus Süd, Struck will manage one of the largest daycare centres in Dortmund. At the start of the new daycare year 2023/24, all 120 places will be taken and for the first time, an additional seven places will be created as a reserve.

  4. Excellent! PETA rates main canteen as vegan-friendly

    The animal rights organisation PETA has now awarded the most vegan-friendly refectories in 2023. Among them is once again the Hauptmensa of the Studierendenwerk Dortmund, which received three out of five possible stars. Only establishments that offer a completely vegetarian or vegan programme received more stars. A total of 41 student and student services organisations from all over Germany applied.

  5. Change in the management of the Studierendenwerk

    The management of Studierendenwerk Dortmund changed on 31.07.2023. Thomas Schlootz, who has worked for the company as managing director since September 2018, is leaving at the end of his contract of employment. Johannes Zedel will take over as his successor on an interim basis. Meanwhile, a new management is being sought - for the first time there will be a dual leadership.

  6. Paper bags and flags - Campus action against violence against women

    Under the motto "Gewalt kommt mir nicht auf dem Campus!", Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts, FH Südwestfalen, Studierendenwerk and TU Dortmund University are launching a joint campaign on their respective campuses to mark the International Day against Violence against Women on 25 November 2023. Around 15,000 printed paper bags will be on display in the cafeterias and canteens of the Studierendenwerk from 20 November to raise awareness of the issue. The print on the bags is not only intended to raise awareness, but also to offer real help: They feature an illustration depicting the "silent cry for help" - a sequence of finger movements that women can use in emergency

  7. The Federal Government's BAföG promises threaten to implode

    According to media reports, the new draft budget of the Ministry of Finance for 2024 provides for 500 million euros less than previously planned. BAföG is particularly affected by the cuts. Even though there is no talk of cuts, increases will hardly be possible with this budget.

    State funding for the refectories: what this means for Dortmund

    Since the beginning of the extreme inflation, the Studierendenwerke NRW have been in talks with the state ministry to avoid having to pass on the exploding costs to the students. At the end of March, the state cabinet announced financial aid of 6.4 million € to absorb the increased costs of purchasing goods for the refectories. Now it has also been published how these funds are to be distributed and offset. This makes it clear: students who eat in the Studierendenwerk Dortmund facilities cannot expect a price reduction - and for good reason.

  13. Faster clean: Relevo return changed

    From now on, Relevo dishes can no longer be returned in the refectory foyer. The return in the refectory building is now either directly in the main refectory at the dish return during the usual opening hours. In general, the dishes and cups can be returned at any facility.
